WAYNE ARMSTRONG

My name is Wayne Armstrong.  I discovered that I could draw with pencils at about the age of 6. My first drawings were simplistic. The normal drawings for your parents, the perfect family, dog, house with trees and flowers. My drawings became much more unique by any young kid standards. I would add dinosaurs, flying prehistoric mythical beings, space ships and one or two alien plant species.

I studied art mediums, forms, and techniques in the early 80s. While I was a stay-at-home dad I spent a great deal of time just trying to perfect my own creations. I won second place in my first art show, the judges told me color adulterates the detail. So, now I utilize the detail of pen and ink and most of my drawings capture many details.

  • What's the best thing about being an artist?
I see things in my head, and I can put them on paper and let other people see them also.
  • What's your biggest source of inspiration?
I get my inspiration from the places i've been, and i'll continue to go even more places, and get even more inspiration.
  • Tell me about your technique
I lay it all out in pencil first, to get the general idea. After I get the concept down to where I think it's ready to work on, I start adding ink and erasing the pencil. After the outline is complete, I just fill in all the details, a lot of which come to me as I'm working.
  • What is your favorite piece?
The griffin is my favorite piece. I did it after my friend who taught me how to do it passed away, so that was pretty special to me.
  • Where does your jungle inspiration come from?
I was in the Army from 74-76. During basic training they called us out for formaiton and told us, "you're not going to Vietnam, you have to go to hawaii." I had a lot of jungle experience while I was there, and also enjoyed surfing and snorkeling.
  • What do you enjoy in your spare time?
I like playing with my grandsons. We are very close. I like kids, because they tell you neat things and sometimes it inspires me. They just tell you want they think. I love family. I have two daughters and two grandsons, and have been married 40 years now.
